Glamour for Thursday!

I'm not really the 'mad-for-shoes' kind of girly-girl; give me a pair of flat driving shoes or boots and I'm happy....but I do have a love for the glamour of vintage footwear and have amassed a small collection over the years.

I don't actually wear them; besides, ladies from these bygone days were far more petite than many of us are today. Its unbelievable sometimes the tiny proportions of some of these little toe trimming treasures.
I'm particularly fond of the alluring boudoir slippers that turn up occasionally at flea markets and fairs. They offer glimpses at a lifestyle where some women had time to be glamorous and could teeter about on tippy-toes in pastel coloured silk heels....
Salmon pink silk slippers with flower trims from the 30's.

*

Magenta velvet ones with sparkly buckle and bow detail from the 50's.

*

Shimmery blue satin kitten heeled slippers from America, also perfect for strutting about the 1950's boudoir!
*

Floppy velvet flower adorned fabric mules with velvet covered shoe stretchers - lots of shabbiness, but charming!

*

A pair of rather matronly (HUGE!) satin slippers from the early part of the C20th. They were made for the 'Army & Navy Stores' in London and are surprisingly large for such an elderly shoe - I can actually fit into these - and very glam I look too! ;-))

*

In contrast are these tiny Chinese embroidered silk shoes, also from the early C2oth, which I think are my favourites. The workmanship is exquisite.

*

A few other examples include these 'perfect for teetering' sling-backed snakeskin sandals from the 1940's! These are minute too and have the classic 40's heel and small platformed sole.
*

An original pair of metallic brocade flapper shoes from the designer Peter Yapp, Sloane St. London, by appointment to H.M. The Queen.

*

Victorian boots made from leather and canvas with 14 buttons on each to fasten before leaving the house!
*

Extremely narrow white leather wedding boots also from the Victorian era.

*

And finally my miniature replica shoe, perfect in every detail. Possibly a salesman's sample, but if you know otherwise, I would love to find out more. It is marked inside 'The Ronert Shoe'.
Have a great day,
Niki x

  2. What a wonderful collection of vintage and antique shoes! When I was a girl in the sixties,I especially liked Barbies high heeled pompommed slippers, to wear with a nightgown INSIDE the house. Very unlike my mother, who had flat slippers and flannel pajama's. Back then I thought I was going to be like Barbie when I grew up, but alas...I have turned up more and more to be like my mother lol!
Thanks for showing your collection, have a nice day!

  3. Oh what a wonderful collection, I adore!!!! those boots, all of them, how wonderful to have feet that tiny and all those buttons to do up!! The snakeskin ones are a bit er...a bit like snakes and we have an aversion to them at Lilly Cottage as they like to come and visit so I couldn't really own those ones as everytime I went to get them out I would have heart failure thinking the snakes were going to get me. Great collection, thanks for sharing, kiss noises Linda Lilly Cottage.

  9. Hi Niki, that is the most beautiful Barbola mirrir I have ever seen. I have two but they are not a patch on yours the depth of the colour is wonderful. Looking back a few posts reminded me I must post some of the pics in an old gardening book I picked up at a jumble sale. They are very similar to yours. I guess it goodbye girls now I bet you barely get them on here before they are snapped up.

  17. Your lovely shoes brought back memories of my friends Mum who always wore high heeled peeptoe slingbacks and those also fluffy heeled boudoir slippers in the house, i thought she was the height of sophistication!!! She always made us laugh because she could never drive in her heels and was always barefoot behind the wheel!!! Thanks for sharing..

  18. I love it when you show us your collections Niki!!! Those shoes are exquisite, very "MIss Pettigrew lives for a day" type shoes! I've often marvelled whilst walking around galleries and museums at just how tiny women's feet were, I think I would have had to walk around barefoot!

  23. L-o-v-e those 'flapper' shoes. I can just imagine myself in them and how elegant I would look - nothing like that in real life as I'm tremendously clumsy.
